Six reasons to stick to your fitness resolution

Happy New Year healthy slimming weight loss or good health resolution with red apple and measuring tape on white wood vintage style calendar for January first.

As the new year starts, many people have resolved to get into their “beach body.” Some make it through the challenge, while others end their resolution early on.

However, maintaining an active lifestyle is more than just having a fit body. Here are some benefits to consider from MedlinePlus before you abandon your fitness resolution:

1. Controlling weight

Keeping an active lifestyle will help shrink your fat cells throughout time. With a proper diet, results could be seen just in time for the three-digit weather. In order to lose the weight, you must burn more calories than what you consume. That does not mean to stop eating. You should consider healthier options and be physically active enough to boost your metabolism.

2. Lowering glucose and insulin levels in the blood

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas and its purpose is to convert sugar from carbs that we eat into energy. Your blood sugar levels decrease when you work out. By regularly working out, you allow your body’s insulin to function better.

When too many carbs are consumed, the extra energy is then stored as fat, resulting in extra pounds.

3. Helps to end smoking addiction

Routine exercising can help make it easier to put the cigarette down. It can reduce the craving and withdrawal symptoms one could encounter while trying to end the addiction. Focusing on your workout can help end the thoughts and urge to smoke. While exercising, your appetite decreases. This helps by allowing you to work out more and avoid binge-eating due to your withdrawal.

4. Stronger bones and muscles

When starting off at a young age, exercising can help build strong bones. This is a benefit for later in life as it will help decrease the rate of bone density loss. Exercising to strengthen your muscles can help you increase or maintain your current muscle mass. Resistance training has been found to increase bone density. This training focuses on quantity. Of course, you should focus on quality, too, but to build more resistance, you need to do more sets throughout your workout.

5. Can improve your sleep

For those who have trouble sleeping at night, exercise helps strengthen circadian rhythm — the 24-hour cycle that differentiates day and nighttime activities.  By exercising, you help to promote daytime alertness, fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

6. Improves health and energy

When you begin to exercise, your body releases endorphins, hormones released from the pituitary gland of the brain. Endorphins at times are referred to as the brain’s “feel good” chemicals because they trigger positive feelings. Endorphins help to block pain, but they also play a key role in your feelings of pleasure, which is why you can encounter an “endorphin high” during a workout, sex or even after eating spicy foods. This rush affects you like codeine, only without the addiction. When your heart rate increases, more blood and endorphins begin to flow. This provides a boost of energy to your body.
