Preparing Your Child for a Medical Test
June 22nd, 2009 · No Comments

Medical procedures and tests can be frightening for both parents and children, so it’s important that you’re both prepared and calm.
The U.S. National Library of Medicine offers these suggestions:
* Give your child a detailed, simple and clear explanation of what is going to happen.
* Be specific about which part of the body will be affected, and how it might feel.
* Allow your child to react — even if it includes anger, screaming or crying — but encourage communication about what he or she is feeling.
* Have your child practice the position that will be required — such as lying down, stretching out an arm, or curling up on one side.
* Talk about why the test or procedure is necessary and how it will help your child.
* Let your child make decisions whenever possible, such as the color of the bandage that may be applied.

Age a factor in Infertility
July 8th, 2008 · No Comments
Among couples with fertility problems, those in which the man is over age 35 have lower pregnancy rates and increased chances of miscarriage, a new study shows. This might have come up as a surprise for those who believe that age has nothing to do with infertility.
To come to this conclusion, French researchers looked at more than 12,000 couples who went to a fertility clinic in France.
In most of the cases, the couples were being treated due to the man’s infertility. The couples underwent a total of 21,239 intrauterine inseminations (IUIs).
The researchers found that women over age 35 had a pregnancy rate of 8.9 percent, compared to 14.5 percent in younger women.

Controlling blood pressure can reduce risk of Dementia
July 8th, 2008 · No Comments
Controlling blood pressure from middle-age onwards may dramatically reduce the chances of developing dementia, researchers have said. Two studies support a link between high blood pressure and dementia risk - with one by an Imperial College London team suggesting treatment could cut this.
The precise reasons why high blood pressure might increase the risk of dementia are not fully understood although many scientists believe that it can starve the brain of bloodflow and the oxygen it carries.
Patients suffering this restricted bloodflow are often described as having “vascular dementia”, and account for approximately a quarter of dementia patients.
So its good if people take precautions at middle age to controll blood pressure to reduce the risk of dementia at a later age.
