Family Fun and Fitness this weekend | Local News Stories – Wahpeton Daily News

Could your youth learn a lifelong skill or pick up a hobby? Is your whole family in need of a wintertime activity?

The NDSU Extension Service of Richland County, North Dakota, may be able to help.

Family Fun and Fitness, co-sponsored by the Extension, will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Wahpeton Community Center. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and families are asked to be on time.

“This is something for the whole family,” said Deb Evenson of the Richland County office. “It’s in the middle of winter and it gets everyone out and moving. We appeal not only to the youth but the whole family.”

Family Fun and Fitness requires a $5 charge per family. It can be paid at the door. Richland County 4-H will collect food items for the Richland Wilkin Emergency Food Pantry.

“We prefer pre-registration, but you can register at the door,” Evenson continued.

Family Fun and Fitness features seven activity sessions this year:

• Want to hit the mark with traditional and 3D targets? Try archery, led by Twin Towns Archery. Youth must be in the third grade or older to participate.

• Create your own plant environment by making a terrarium. Limit 12 participants per session. Taught by Master Gardeners Karen Weber, Penny Seifert and Jen Skoog.

• Learn the rules and play with the experts at table tennis. Limit eight participants per session. Taught by Ronda Gripentrog.

• Create your own wooden checkerboard using tape and paint. Limit 12 participants per session. Taught by Ronda Gripentrog.

• Construct your own catapult out of everyday items, then use it to hurl marshmallows. Limit 12 participants per session.

• Test your skills in “Minute to Win In,” a series of short, timed games. Limit 12 participants per session. Led by Alyson Krier.

• Learn how to decorate cookies and take home four of your own. Limit 12 participants per session.

Families must choose which three activities they want to participate in. Family Fun and Fitness has three 50-minute sessions between 1-4 p.m. Not all activities are available for each session.

“We’re expecting about 100 individuals, or 30-40 families,” Evenson said.

Youth age 7 and under be accompanied by an adult. A completed health form is required for youth age 8 and above who are not accompanied by an adult.

“Youth without signed health forms will not be able to participate,” states a brochure for the event.

Snow showers are forecast for Sunday, Jan. 27. Evenson is optimistic that families who are able will attend Family Fun and Fitness.

“The best part is that we do teach new skills,” she said. “Archery, for instance, is something you can use well into adulthood. They’re not only fun activities. We like to teach the skills as well.”

Family Fun and Fitness is sponsored by Richland County 4-H and the United Way of Richland-Wilkin.
